It feels less like a tool that I'm operating, and more like a strange, alien brain that I can bounce ideas off of. From the ancient star maps that guided the first explorers to the complex, interactive dashboards that guide modern corporations, the fundamental purpose of the chart has remained unchanged: to illuminate, to clarify, and to reveal the hidden order within the apparent chaos. You have to believe that the hard work you put in at the beginning will pay off, even if you can't see the immediate results. This means using a clear and concise title that states the main finding. If you had asked me in my first year what a design manual was, I probably would have described a dusty binder full of rules, a corporate document thick with jargon and prohibitions, printed in a soulless sans-serif font.
