The natural human reaction to criticism of something you’ve poured hours into is to become defensive. The door’s form communicates the wrong function, causing a moment of frustration and making the user feel foolish. A red warning light indicates a serious issue that requires immediate attention, while a yellow indicator light typically signifies a system malfunction or that a service is required. They are beautiful not just for their clarity, but for their warmth, their imperfection, and the palpable sense of human experience they contain. The science of perception provides the theoretical underpinning for the best practices that have evolved over centuries of chart design. Digital planners are a massive segment of this market.
