Catalog Divespace

Catalog Divespace - By drawing a simple line for each item between two parallel axes, it provides a crystal-clear picture of which items have risen, which have fallen, and which have crossed over. The detailed illustrations and exhaustive descriptions were necessary because the customer could not see or touch the actual product. From there, you might move to wireframes to work out the structure and flow, and then to prototypes to test the interaction. Finally, for a professional team using a Gantt chart, the main problem is not individual motivation but the coordination of complex, interdependent tasks across multiple people. The beauty of this catalog sample is not aesthetic in the traditional sense.

The typographic system defined in the manual is what gives a brand its consistent voice when it speaks in text. The question is always: what is the nature of the data, and what is the story I am trying to tell? If I want to show the hierarchical structure of a company's budget, breaking down spending from large departments into smaller and smaller line items, a simple bar chart is useless. Marshall McLuhan's famous phrase, "we shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us," is incredibly true for design. A professional, however, learns to decouple their sense of self-worth from their work. They now have to communicate that story to an audience.
